Home to Provincial and National Parks, 439 individual species, and over 1500 square kilometres of lush forest, stunning lakes, and rich wetlands, the Beaver Hills Biosphere has been recognized as one of the most unique ecological locations on earth—and it’s right here, in our own back yard.
The origin of the Beaver Hills dates back to nearly 12,000 BCE when retreating glacial ice carved out the region’s topography as we know it today. Characterized by its unique “knob and kettle” terrain, the Biosphere’s boreal forests, freshwater lakes, and abundant wetlands have laid the foundation for an area extraordinarily rich in wildlife diversity. Of particular note is the area’s global significance as a seasonal ground for more than 150 species of migratory birds, as well as the home of Canada’s first established bird sanctuary.
